Goals should have a date
“I want to buy a house someday” is difficult to plan. “I need ₹X in 8 years” gives you a measurable target.
Why inflation belongs in every goal plan
A goal's future cost is often different from its price today. SEBI's visual goal planner explicitly demonstrates the interaction between inflation, return and the amount invested over time.
Examples of useful goals
Goal planning checklist
- Set a target date.
- Estimate today's cost.
- Apply a reasonable inflation assumption.
- Subtract assets already dedicated to the goal.
- Choose a return assumption consistent with the risk you can actually accept.
- Review the plan annually.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the same return assumption for every goal?
Not necessarily. A short-term goal and a long-term goal can have very different risk capacities and suitable investment mixes.
What if my required monthly investment is too high?
Consider increasing the time horizon, increasing contributions gradually, adjusting the goal, or reviewing the assumed return — but do not simply choose an unrealistically high return.
