What to check before taking the loan

  • Compare the annualised borrowing cost, not only the headline rate.
  • Check processing fees, insurance, foreclosure/prepayment terms and other charges.
  • For floating-rate personal loans, understand how a rate reset can affect EMI or tenure.
  • Keep an emergency buffer so the EMI does not force you to borrow again.
Smart comparison: Calculate the same loan at a lower rate and a shorter tenure. A small rate/tenure change can materially alter lifetime interest.

How EMI actually works

An EMI combines principal repayment and interest. Early in a typical amortising loan, a larger share of the EMI goes toward interest; as the outstanding principal falls, the interest component generally falls too.

Lower rate
Usually reduces interest cost, all else equal.
Shorter tenure
Usually increases EMI but can reduce total interest.
Prepayment
Can reduce interest if the loan terms make prepayment economical.

EMI is not the full borrowing cost

Before comparing two loans, look beyond EMI. Processing charges, insurance, legal/valuation charges, prepayment conditions and the annualised rate/APR or other disclosed cost can change the effective cost.

For floating-rate personal loans, RBI guidance requires lenders to communicate the impact of rate resets and provide relevant repayment information; borrowers should read the loan agreement and Key Facts Statement carefully. citeturn0search24

Questions an individual should ask

  • What is my total interest over the full tenure?
  • What happens if the interest rate rises?
  • Can I prepay, and what are the applicable terms?
  • Is the EMI affordable even after a temporary income shock?
  • Am I taking a longer tenure only to make the EMI look smaller?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a lower EMI always mean a better loan?

No. A lower EMI can result from a longer tenure, which may increase total interest.

Should I compare EMI or total repayment?

Compare both. EMI determines monthly cash flow; total repayment shows the broader borrowing cost.

Can the calculator predict my exact bank EMI?

It is an estimate. The lender's rate, disbursement timing, rounding, fees and repayment terms can change the actual schedule.
